In Drive for Wind Power, Man Who Led Coal Plant Seeks Atonem

nytimes.com -- By KEITH BRADSHER July 2, 2009
Min Deqing, who delayed pollution controls at his coal plant in Lanzhou, is promoting clean energy. “I feel regretful, and sorry for the people,” he says.
A guilty conscience turned Min Deqing into northwestern China’s unlikely prophet of wind and solar energy.
Shortly after he assumed the top job, officials from the local environmental protection bureau came to him and asked that he install modern pollution-control equipment to help improve the city’s soot-filled air. Mr. Min had just finished three years as head of the power plant’s auditing department and knew just how bad the pollution was, he said.
But he stalled for three years before finally installing the equipment, because it was costly and he did not want to dent the plant’s profits

I'm sure he made his apology as they led him out to be shot in the head. That's the normal method of justice in China. And they bill the family for the bullet used in the execution.

I think he did just fine. Well, that's after the stalling on it for three years. At least it's not a decade like with some here in the US!

A step in the right direction, but the the crap about not making a dent in the company's profits just shows you where their priorities are. I wonder how the Chinese feel about being good corporate citizens?

Bully for China. At least they're doing this without instituting a silly and debilitating "carbon cap". I wish our politicians had that much sense.

Any INVESTMENT done for Alternative and/or ReNewable Fuels/Energies would be better than goin' after the so-called CAP&TRADE for which only the Consumers and Industry of this Country will SUFFER in higher Taxes and Prices. There will be no other Country that will follow the Obama lead on this one, only the dumb-a__ Representatives that now hold all the playin' cards!

This article underscores a basic truth: People can only afford to care about pollution and the environment when their needs are met.

China don't care how they kill or the health of their people. It all comes to how greedy you are and have gotten. They all are rotten to the core. Even in the US profit comes first side beside greed.

He may have been correct to prioritize his expenses. Had he gone ahead when first approached and lost money at the plant Then the Government may have taken over and never implemented the changes. By controlling expenses he was able to help his workers with more pressing needs. That may have been the right thing at the time. Also, now they are developing the wind power with loans from the bank it says, instead of tax grants from the Government. Instead of being $-trillions in debt with devalued dollars they are the most rapidly developing industrial country. Yes they are the worst polluting in the world and their Government doesn't plan on changing that before 2015. Meanwhile the USA is sucking their exhaust fumes and going bankrupt with more Gov. taxes or attempts to pass more License fee expenses on carbon fuels (Cap & Trade Bill) which will raise the cost of everything.

It is Good he is adding Wind Power, But there is a time and place for all things. This IS NOT the Time for our Government to Crush the Economy with increased Expenses and further devalued Dollars.

This should throw a wrench into the gears of those that keep spreading MISINFORMATION, by saying that China isn't doing anything to curb air pollution.

They keep using that as an excuse for the U.S not to do anything either.

Their argument is, 'why bother to do anything about air pollution when China isn't doing anything'.

mlambo--Exactly. Remember how pollluted Beijing was before the Olympics? And they were desperately trying to clean up the air? I applaud Mr. Min's efforts but I think China--and other polluting countries--need many more like him.
