A Better Way to Get Hydrogen from Water

Technology Review -- An experimental approach to splitting water might lead to a relatively cheap and clean method for large-scale hydrogen production that doesn't require fossil fuels. The process splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using heat and catalysts made from inexpensive materials.

Heat-driven water splitting is an alternative to electrolysis, which is expensive and requires large amounts of electricity. The new approach, developed by Caltech chemical-engineering professor Mark Davis, avoids the key problems with previous heat-driven methods of water splitting. It works at relatively low temperatures and doesn't produce any toxic or corrosive intermediate products.

Hydrogen as a vehicle fuel will produce No pollution and is a much cleaner burning fuel. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe and reliable, has a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Would have been nice, if the authors had clarified whether polluted or salt water, would work and if the exact type of manganese oxide (MnO/MnO2 were used and whether the manganese oxide were recoverable after the process. This is a problem to be solved on the horizon since pure toxic free water is becoming more of a commodity.
