My wife's van has one of those read-outs that indicate miles left to fill-up, and I think it drives us to fill-up more frequently. I ran it down to 0, once, and filled-up within a mile of that point.

Used to be that 400 was the standard, no driving past that point(and believe me I cut it close on fill-ups to test it. Now it seems that, surprisingly, I often can go 420-430 miles between fill-ups. Although I much prefer to fill-up when it reaches 1/2 full.

2008 M-B E320 diesel with a 21 gallon tank and an average 32 mpg gets me beyond 600 miles most any time.
With my best one tank mileage of 38mpg I can get pretty close to 800.
If I drove 55 mph on flat terrain, with no headwind, then 800 miles would be manageable.
Downhill with a tailwind, now that would be...

My best tank so far has been slightly over 700 miles on approximately 15.5 gallons. My goal is to get the ever elusive 800 mile tankful.

I once had my van travel 714 km in a single fill up
i had my bathing suit on the total time anticipating my landing spot in Treasure Island Florida - arguably the BEST beach in world and I have been taken to many places from Mexico to Nassau to the Dominican to Bahamas to the Cayman Islands and everything in between
I always wanted a sign "if this van's rockin' don't start knockin" but nobody has sent me one yet.

I can get almost 300mi on a tank, but I commonly top off after I get between 1/3 and 1/2, especially in the winter months

About 450-500 if I ran it completely dry and stayed on open highway. In the real world I refill weekly after about 250 miles.

ə it should get a little over 300 miles/483km. i once ran out right at 320 miles. the fuel gauge does not work, and i had not been paying attention.
if i drove mostly on the highway, it would get close to 600km. ə

I've definitely heard that before, gotahorse, and had my in tank lift pump replaced at about 200,000 miles. It hadn't failed, but it was getting noisy. I regularly run my tank down to below 1/8th or less.
If I knew of a definitive 'X amount of gallons' to keep it covered, I might change my habits. But hitting 700 or 800 miles a tank is too tempting a target, so I almost always run it down.

Does your vehicle have an in-the-tank fuel pump? Most do. That pump heats up and wears out faster if there isn't much gas in the tank to keep it cool.

I have 2011 Flex avg 26 on highway and get 475 per tank, full size comfort...and the newer flexes get eaven better..listen people Ford has a better idea! Higher gas milage...

I drive a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis GS 4.6l V8 and get an average of 22 mpg (best was 25.2 on a cross-country road-trip), If I fill the tank and drive at 70mph on cruise I will go approximately 345 miles (I have never ran out of gas)

I average 16-17mpg in my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0l I-6. I fill up at the half tank line usually averaging 150-200 miles per tank.

I have a Prius @50mpg w/11.9 gal. capacity=595 miles per tank. Keeping .9gal in reserve I can get 500 miles at fill-up time. Depending on conditions it may vary +- 2mpg. It's fun!

My last tank had me at almost 600 miles on the last fill. Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl., 2.4 litre. If I was driving straight highway on a trip I'm sure I'd get over 600. The car was made for road trips.

I average about 500 miles in a mini cooper s. the max I've gotten was 594 on one tank and still trying to break that. My goal is to eventually get over 600 miles on a single tank.

I get 29+ mpg on my 4 cylinder 2006 Nissan Altima. It helped that I just put 4 new tires on it though. But I am very happy with it anyway. It has a 15+ gallon fuel tank and I can probably get 425-450 (highway mostly) if I push it on fumes. I don't like to do that thought so I gas up after about 350 miles (which is usually about 12 gallons). My last car was a 2003 Hyundai Elantra that got 31+ mpg. Also a 4 cylinder, but a 5 speed manual transmission. I could probably push 400 miles out of a tank if I had to. That was fantastic but the size of the fuel tank was only 10+ gallons. I loved it but totaled it. ;-(

@BDC: His tank is about 15.5 gallons. I've got a 2005 Golf TDI and can squeeze in 16 gallons if it's on fumes. These little diesels get fantastic mileage, which more than makes up the extra cost of diesel over regular.
I live where it's flat and there aren't many interstates, so I often see 750 miles per tank if I'm careful.

I'm voting (C). People ask me a lot about the mileage my car gets and many folks seem clueless to the actual miles per gallon. They only see it costs $60 to fill up, when they only put $45 in their Corolla with its 12 gallon tank. Nevermind it's got an easy 10 mpgs on the other econ car. It's even worse if someone says, “Wow, I only put about $20 a week in my car!” Yeah, and you only go 120 miles! $20 would get me 245 miles.
I think most average (non-Gasbuddy/enthusiast types) don't even know how to calculate mileage.

My 2007 Toyota Corolla is doing 34MPG in town, and 37MPG on the highway. So, on the highway I expect to get 400Miles before I panic and start looking for a gas station.
