BPA orders NW wind farms to curtail production

Yahoo --

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Bonneville Power Administration twice ordered Pacific Northwest wind farms to cut production in recent days because it has a surplus of power from hydroelectric dams.

The agency, which manages much of the power grid in the Northwest, confirmed it issued the orders during the early morning hours of Sunday and Monday, when demand is low.

The action rekindles a dispute from last year, when the agency curtailed wind turbines because the water from a large mountain snowpack left the region with more hydropower than the electrical grid could handle.

Michael Milstein, a BPA spokesman, said spring runoff has picked up in the past month or two. "Originally it wasn't looking like that wet of a year, but that has changed," he said.

The agency controls a majority o

How about that. Too much power. At times Ontario has too much power and we PAY other constituencies to take our excess power. Unbelievably stupid.

They should, if they aren't already, be selling the computer data centers on the abundance of cheap power in the great Pacific northwest. Get their business - they run 24 / 7 - there is virtually no "off peak" time for them!

What a mismanaged, and arrogant, agency BPA is. FERC warned them not to do it last year -- which was a farce. Thanks for the story. When are we going to have a real power grid in this country? BPA is jealous of renewables.

Just like the refiners. Too much cheap oil so they cut production to keep the prices up.

Hydro seems to have been missed in the rush to green. ...and it seems to be superior to the other overly hyped green power sources.

Rather than curtailing it, there should be more investments to either allow it to be supplied to more areas, or storage facilities. Energy shortage is the trend in most parts of the world, not surplus!

This is what happens when you can't distribute power as needed when some areas produce more than they need.
